How could I have forgotten just how wonderful libraries are?
You know when you’ve loved something for a long time and you don’t doubt that you love it but if you’re honest, you’ve probably taken it a bit for granted? Well that was me about libraries. And I work in a library! However, I was recently reminded of the magic that lives in these delightful places and it is so wonderful to feel this wonder once again.
This all began last Friday when I attended a library conference online that included conversations about reading and the incredible power of books and sharing information. More than one presenter spoke about the significance of creating cosy spaces to encourage every community member to feel welcome and safe in their library. When I thought about this, I instantly remembered what drew me to working in this field – that feeling of belonging and familiarity that reaches people in a way unlike any other. Even in my dreary old local public library when I was growing up was a reprieve from the world and a source of safety and comfort.
But libraries have come a long way since those days and it didn’t take me long to list off my top favourite things about libraries:
- You can’t overstay your welcome. Seriously, you could hang out in a public library all day every day (when they are open!) and that is absolutely fine
- They are usually warm, dry, safe and have some sort of comfy seats (some more than others)
- Stating the obvious but the multitude of books, magazines and other items to consume
- Free wi-fi! Which is great on its own but also means access to online library services which offer a whole other wealth of treasures – audiobooks, e-books, movies, online courses
Early in my library career, I heard a lot of talk about libraries evolving from the stereotypical stuffy, serious environments they were known for and shifting to becoming a ‘third place’ for library users to enjoy. Third places are spaces in communities that are outside work and home but where people can come for recreation and connection (Scott, 2011). Many libraries have succeeded in creating this third place and this is what I have in mind when I think of the loveliest libraries where I have worked and visited. The smell of coffee from the coffee machine, book group meet ups happening in meeting rooms, tourists settling in to use the wi-fi, students studying hard and families borrowing piles of books and DVDs. It’s just the best. If you haven’t visited a library in a while, it could be worth checking one out and see if you can feel the magic.
